our story.

Welcome to Broken Goat which is nestled among the mountains in the quaint town of Rossland, B.C. This event is so much more than just a race. It's a feeling. A weekend getaway. A place where likeminded people gather for a weekend of mountain running, craft beer, entertainment and celebration. Where you come with friends and make new ones.

In September 2009 my husband and I were married in this small Kootenay town. We celebrated with close friends, family and planned a full weekend of trail running, mountain biking, hiking and golf around our ceremony. We loved it there so much, we wanted to continue to share it with others. So naturally, in the fall of 2014 we came up with a race concept after a fun scouting trip with the PACE team and voila! In July of 2015 Broken Goat was born. The PACE team and I now enjoy celebrating our "new" anniversary with folks from all over the land.

take me to the mountains.

The 50k & 25k course follow the 7summits trail which is a spectacular point to point single-track traverse of the Rossland Range. It is challenging, adventurous, has spectacular views and is a true epic experience, making it the crown jewel of the Rossland trail network. The race starts at an elevation of 1574m and 50k runners will summit 4 peaks along the way and 2 ridges varying in elevation & peaking at Old Glory Mountain at 2376m. 25k runners will summit 1 peak and 1 ridge with elevation peaking at Mount Plowman at 2241m. The entire 12k course & Vertical Climb takes place on Red Mountain which peaks at 2072m at the summit.

The weekend is filled with epic trail running, craft beer, amazing food and great company - all of this is set around the majestic mountains of this quaint Kootenay town.

personal touch.

From the beginning we have tried to to put as much heart and soul into our events as possible. We recognize and appreciate the investment that folks put into our series and we wanted to find special ways to show our gratitude in return. This started off with me wanting to make homemade finishers medals. For the first race in our series I made medals out of dough and cooked them in my oven. I learned very quickly that these little nuggets don't have the long-lasting potential of clay, so I signed up for a pottery membership, took lessons and started making ceramic medals. I now make over 1,000 medals per year with help of family & friends when I can get them in the studio with me.  I have also progressed into making wine cups for some of the top finishing prizes.

I also kicked off the race series by gathering my mom, aunt(s) and 93yr grandmother to help make apple pies as race prizes and giveaways. It has become an annual event for Nimble Bear every year!  My Mom and I also make a variety of homemade jams, which were the first prizes we made in 2013 for Wandering Moose (formally Autumn Rush).

My dad has also been heavily involved with my series.  From the inception of Broken Goat, he has helped hunt down the beer steins for this event, scouring second hand stores and treasure shacks all over Vancouver Island. He has great stories of lederhosen and shop owners that have him on speed dial when a new arrival shows up and my phone often lights up with a picture of the next hidden gem.
